With the intention to further investigate the existence of a rare virgin and unspoilt ecosystem, under the leadership of Dr Nicolai and his trusted associate Dr Kathryn Jennings, a group of seasoned cave divers led by Jack McAllister is assembled. Equipped with the latest in modern technology, the researchers will ambitiously begin their expedition deep inside the heart of the mountain, in what seems to be a vast interconnected network of undiscovered caverns. However,they gradually progress deeper into the earth, four kilometres underground, a completely unknown and extremely hostile life form awaits them exposing the mountain's deadly secret which will sooner or later, engage the team in a battle for survival between species.
A group of cave-divers and scientists explore a newly found cave system in Romania. With their leader Jack having very strange side-effects and with their numbers dropping, the group must delve even further into the cave, battle the creatures and hope for an exit.
Released the same year and wrongly compared to the claustrophobic, dramatic cave horror the Descent (2005), The Cave is an entirely different beast.<br/><br/>First time director Bruce Hunt keeps the pace fast and interesting. The underwater photography and lighting is note worthy. The story contains elements of Alien, Levithan, AVP and Predator to name a fewJack played by Pitch Black actor Cole Hauser must guide his team of explorers out of an maze of unchartered caves before they are killed by underground creatures.<br/><br/>It's more an adventure than horror. Michael Steinberg & Tegan West's writing covers more concept than substance. It delves into DNA, genetics and micro-ecology's but only touches the surface going for the usual creature feature action pieces.<br/><br/>Possibly Dr. Jennings (Lena Headey) and Piper Perabo's 'Charlie' aside, The Caves failing is that none of characters are likable which is oddsome are fleshed out, but you simply don't care for them. That said, there's some tension built between and the supporting cast when things go awry.<br/><br/>The music, sets and lighting are first class with some great backdrop visuals. The creature effects are excellent and have a organic realism about them. It's a well executed film that has been copied many times by cave/monster low budgeters since, however, it was sadly over shadowed and overlooked on its release.<br/><br/>Worth watching but don't expect to be rocked.
The Cave starts out kind of intriguing, I've always loved the idea of spelunking, and discovering lost treasure and caves… but this movie lacked the atmosphere, and the treasure. It lacked the awe and mystique of discovery and gave too much too soon too little too late.<br/><br/>Nowadays scary movie makers feel forced to come up with an ending that says 1 thing. "This could be happening now, in your world." The problem is, it's a formulaic scare tactic which often the case results in massive plot holes, and stupidity just to accomplish. This movie is no exception. We've seen it before; in Darkman, and Cabin Fever, and hundreds of other crappy movies.<br/><br/>Not to mention a film with this thin a plot, and no real scares, will always fail because directing in such tight spaces requires talent, and it was obvious Bruce Hunt doesn't have any. I don't know about you but I hate watching a 100 minute film where I can only see what's going on for half the film. The creature was a ripoff of Alien, but that seems to be an epidemic in the new millennium. Uwe Boll fever.<br/><br/>This movie was a lot of things, good is not one of them. Carrying elements from Pitch Black, Deep Blue Sea, and Aliens, i was bored to tears halfway through. Cole Hauser should know by now how to choose a role, but it's obvious he isn't looking for any Oscars.<br/><br/>Movies aren't even worth seeing anymore.
It's increasingly hard to work up a fright on the screen these days, but even if The Cave doesn't exactly terrify, it's fun and looks great.

American cave-diving brothers Jack (<a href="/name/nm0369513/">Cole Hauser</a>) and Tyler (<a href="/name/nm0004827/">Eddie Cibrian</a>) McAllister, survivalist Top Buchanan (<a href="/name/nm0004820/">Morris Chestnut</a>), cameraman Alex Kim (<a href="/name/nm0196654/">Daniel Dae Kim</a>), rock-climber Charlie (<a href="/name/nm0005305/">Piper Perabo</a>), sonar expert Strode (<a href="/name/nm0201061/">Kieran Darcy-Smith</a>), and first scout Briggs (<a href="/name/nm0712262/">Rick Ravanello</a>) eventually descend into the cave together. When Strode's water scooter explodes, the entrance to the caverns caves in, and the explorers must find another way out. Along the way, they stumble across scattered equipment and the remains of previous explorers and soon come to realize that they are being stalked by unknown, but highly vicious, creatures. The Cave is based on a screenplay written by Michael Steinberg and Tegan West. Actually, the cave has been known about for many years. The Knights Templar built an abbey over it in the 13th century to seal the entrancea display of "God's protective power," and a group of explorers unearthed the cavern 30 years earlier when they tried to blast their way into the system, causing a landslide that buried the abbey and trapped them in the cave, never to be seen again. Nicolai and Kathryn, while excavating the ruins of the abbey, rediscover the cave entrance. The V.S.S.F. tattoo stands for "Verband Schweizerischer Sprengfachleute" or "Swiss Society of Explosive Engineers". Strode is the first to be carried off by one of creatures, followed by Nicolai. Charlie is gutted when she attempts to climb to a hole in the cave ceiling and is attacked by a flying creature. Briggs is hauled up the side of a cliff by a creature, and Alex is eaten by one. Jack is killed when he leaps on a flying creature, and an explosion causes the cave walls to start collapsing. Tyler, Top, and Kathryn make it to the surface. Tyler, Top, and Kathryn get out of the cave by following a stream of cold water to where it merges with a river on the surface. Some days later, Tyler joins Kathryn at a table at a sidewalk cafe. He asks Kathryn whether Jack might have survived outside. Kathryn admits that, at first she thought the parasite couldn't survive outside the cave environment, but now she's not so sure. She leans forward, kisses his cheek, and peers at him over the tops of her sunglasses. "I think it wants to get out," she says, showing that her eyes have begun to mutate the same way that Jack's eyes did. She then gets up and hurries off into the crowd. In the final scene, Tyler tries to follow her, but Kathryn has disappeared. The Cave is most often compared to three other movies—<a href="/title/tt0451262/">Within (2005)</a> (2005) (aka The Cavern), The <a href="/title/tt0435625/">The Descent (2005)</a> (2005), and the sequel <a href="/title/tt1073105/">The Descent: Part 2 (2009)</a> (2009). All four movies have similar plots and are shot in a manner provoking the greatest amount of claustrophobia.
